jaxon's shelves for his big boy room

newly painted campaign dresser for the nursery

i bought a pair of owls at target for each room. they were a dollar each, so i couldn't pass it up.

i think they were meant for an outdoor figurine because they were in the dollar aisle with all of the outdoor/spring inspired items.

all we did is spray them with a couple coats of paint: jaxon got white and baby harper gets the gold

remember when i was talking about framing this fabric, well i did.

and how precious is this light fixture?!

i picked it up at an antique store.

i am so indecisive, but when i went into the store and saw it, i was purchasing it 20 minutes later after browsing the rest of the selection they had to offer.

and this beautifully delicate knit blanket for the crib.

i wanted to go subtle with the blanket, because i ended up getting this fabric for the sheets.

i ordered this in a turquoise background with a white pattern though. i just love it!

so as you can see, we've been pretty busy around here. well, actually my husband has been busy painting all of this!

hopefully one day i'll get back on track with my posts:)

decision no. 1: fabric choices

here are a couple fabric choices for the baby's nursery.

i think i'm going for an overall neutral color story, but with pops of turquoise, yellow and a hint of pink
i would choose 2-3 of the fabrics -at the most- and use them for toss pillows, a changing table pad or sheets

or maybe even frame one.

but maybe i'll do that with accessories?

we finished the back splash project in time to bring in the new year. however, i have not been as diligent in taking photos of the finished product. i had a few minutes this week so here it is.

just as a reminder: here is what i started with.

along the way we installed new light fixtures both above the island and kitchen table

and finally the back splash!

not to mislead you- we had a professional take on this job and i'm glad we did.

i like the idea of not using the standard pink or purple for a little girl's room.

here are a couple super cute and still 'girly' rooms without using pink as the main color.

love the pop of b&w

the use of bright white as a background really balance the bright colors

i am in LOVE with this room

the headboards, dual chandeliers and the bedskirts!

what i love about this room is the neutral pallette with touches of

rich jewel toned accessories. it's soothing to the eye without being the least bit boring or predictable.

these are some of my color inspirations for the nursery. i kow, such a change from my first set of inspiration photos, but i think this is more up my alley, especially the last two rooms.

we were at ikea this past weekend looking for a bed for jaxon.

we decided on this one minus the two extra panels for the headboard

which make this bed's headboard super duper high.

i like the look, just not the extra $300 to make it happen.

so...i've been keeping something from you,

i'm pregnant! and it's a girl!!

the task at hand, and what has been on my mind lately:

the nursery design. i still have about 4 1/2 months but it doesn't hurt to get some ideas, right?

the lenox: boston

so as i said before, i stayed in the lenox while in boston for work

it was a really nice hotel that had great service

and was very stylish at the same time.

the style is classic, regency.

however, when i stepped into the lobby restroom

i couldn't help but notice that they threw in a zen vibe with the classic look

i am loving this back splash tile.

three other small added touches that i appreciated:

1- the old school phone on each floor, i've been thinking about getting one for my house

2- complimentary snacks available for all guests

along with delicious coffee in the morning, cookies in the afternoon and hot cocoa in the evening

just like your visiting grandma's house :)

3- and the black painted doors with gold trim.

all in all, it was a good trip, considering the circumstances

but i was so glad to be on the way home on thursday evening

and just a quick update:

remember the weeping pussy willow i purchased

from trader joes? check out the progress and the beautiful blooms forming

it is supposed to bloom pink flowers in the spring. how pretty!

Boston Trip: Puma

the plan was to go to boston for an overnight trip for work to attend a training seminar.

well, we ended up completing the training semiar on time

the entrance to the puma showroom

however the weather all across the country was not on our side

we were stuck in boston for an extra 2 1/2 days, due to the loads of snow in boston as well as chicago

lounge area/ waiting room

the silver lining: i met some great friends

sidenote: don't you love these floors. i've admired them before at a tile store and seeing them all laid out made me like them more. they are a brushed metallic finish.

silver lining no. 2: i was able to enjoy the excellent cuisine that boston has to offer.

i've never had so much seafood in my life! and it was GOOD. from clam chowder and crab bisque to

seabass with lobster ravioli, let's just say i was in heaven- and probably gained an extra 10 lbs.

they have a category in their line: motorsport which offers authentic

ferarri and ducati racing designs, hence the scooters.

i was also able to shop on newberry, a cute street with fabulous shops. luckily, we stayed

in the downtown area at the lenox hotel

so we were conveniently located to all the restaurants and shopping.

overall, it was a drag to get stuck away from my family but we definitely made the best of it!

i like to say it was a 'forced vacation' with new friends!

as a child-and well through the years of my life-we would always go to this one restaurant on saturdays and order an apple pancake. it is not a regular pancake with apples on it, but it is like a "deep dish" style pancake with apple and caramelly goodness on top.

well, i didn't feel like going out this past saturday, so i made one. my version wasn't as dense, but it was just as delicious!

maybe you should try this recipe this weekend. let me know how you like it.

boom boom room: quick recap

i told you about the boom boom room event i attended last week for my friend's business.

well, here it our station all set up.

honestly, it was one of the best looking booths in the event!

these are a couple of the canvases that she sells

and the placemats, totes and notecards are what she gave out to everyone.

how gorgeous is this arrangement we came up with
the night of set up.

these were my wedding colors too!

here was another display from a delicious bakery located in LA.

i tried the red velvet cupcake and almost died!

woldn't this be a cute set up for a little girls birthday party or baby shower?

but, i had to get home for my cousin's wedding on saturday.

peanut butter brownie buddies

these are absolutely deeeeelish!

1 c plus 2 T all-purpose flour

1/3 c unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 t baking powder

1/2 t salt

1 1/4 c sugar

6 T butter, melted

2 t vanilla

3 eggs

1 14-oz can sweetened condensed milk

1/2 c peanut butter

1 1/2 c chocolate chips

3/4 c peanut butter chips

1/4 c whipping cream

14 mini reeses peanut butter cups

preheat oven to 350 F. grease a 13x9x2 pan.

in medium bowl: stir together flour, cocoa powder, baking poder, and salt.

in another bowl: combine sugar, melted butter, and 1 t of the vanilla. stir until combined, then add eggs, one at a time, stirring until combined. add flour mixture and combine. spread batter into pan and bake for 20 minutes.

while brownie layer is baking- lightly beat remaining egg. stir in sweetened condensed milk, peanut butter, and remaining 1 t vanilla, mix well. stir in 1 c of chocolate chips and peanut butter chips.

when brownie layer is done baking, spread the peanut butter mixture over the hot brownie and bake an additional 20-25 minutes or until peanut butter layer is set and edges are lightly browned.

in a small bowl, combine whipping cream and remaining 1/2 c chocolate chips. microwave for 40-60 seconds, until chocolate chips melt. drizzle mixture over cooled bars and sprinkle with chopped peanut butter cups.

i suggest eating these when they are still warm -so yummy!

well, she is so awesome and has been invited to participate in the upcoming boom boom room event-

a pre-golden globes celebration in california!

it is a gifting event for celebrity parents which offer them the most stylish

items in the market.

how fun, right! and i am going with her!!

isn't stacy's house amazing? she renovated it a few years ago when she moved into this house.

the cutest plant on earth

i love my new plant that i picked up at trader joe's this past sunday.

it is a weeping pussy willow.

it's just a baby now, so it will bloom in the spring and then i assume get those great

furry buds afterwards. the downside: i have to plant it outside in the spring so it won't get to stay in my entrance forever. it's probably better that way, it will most definitely have a longer life.

but meanwhile, i'm going to run to ikea to get a cheap pot to place it in- until then.

in the neighborhood

i had to go to a dr.'s appointment about 25 minutes east of my house.

so after the appointment this modern house caught my eye.

so i did what anyone else would do, i took a picture and drove around the neighborhood

for more amazing and eclectic homes!

this house was the type that is narrow in width, but boy was this house long.

it went on forever! and the detail on the right side of the house was gorgeous.

this was the side of the house. it is on a corner lot and was very pretty both front and side views

new construction, i don't think they are quite finished

and this beauty was sitting on top of a large hill.

i love these suburban neighborhoods that have unique, custom homes

as well as a nice wooded, hilly area. it almost feels like you aren't right in the middle

of the "land of flat."

those of you from either coasts may not appreciate the hills and winding roads that you may have.

here in the midwest, it's pretty much one level with the exception of a few choice neighborhoods.

dining room...finally!

have you ever had a design concept in your head, then when you go to plan it on paper- or in my case the item arrives at your house- you look at it, scrunch your nose, and say that's not what i really wanted.

well, that is the story of my dining room. finally, we finished it and i couldn't be more happy with the outcome.

so as you can see, i've been all over the place, and now i have finally settled on this:

we painted the walls and

purchased the table from crate and barrel outlet

and here's a reminder of what my ebay chairs looked like upon arrival to my house

my husband was my hero and painted them in 20 and 30 degree weather

and i re-upholstered them, making sure to center the beautiful pattern.

i got this fabric at crate and barrel outlet and i'm so glad i did!

isn't it funny how 40 people coming to your house motivates you to get some of your to-do list items on your to-done list! we had a family party on saturday to celebrate the new year and i'm glad we got this dining room done. we definitely needed all the addtional seating we could get!

i made baked jalepeno poppers the other night and they were so tasty. i took some pictures, but i didn't want to post them, so i stole an image from a site- it's really hard to take a quality photo of food after the daylight goes...anywho...these are amazing and i'm bringing them to my friend's house for nye.

here's how to make them:

(note: mine are not whole, i cut them lenght-wise, so this picture is a little deceiving but you get the idea, right)

~cut peppers length-wise and de-seed and de-vein them

~mix softened cream cheese, shredded colby jack or chedder, garlic powder, salt and paprika

(and i think i may have added a little milk? not sure, you make the call)

~stuff this mixture into the halves

~top with panko bread crumbs

~bake at 375 for about 15 minutes or until the topping is nice and golden brown

these are de-lish! happy new year friends!

cowhide: a neutral approach

i'm a fan of cowhide rugs,

but if i were to get one for my house, it would have to be all white.

or at least almost all white.

there's just something that is so elegant about the white version

compared to the black/white variations we see all of the time.

we finally got the ledges and placed them in our upstairs hall

for my mini photo gallery that i have been thinking about for quite some time.

i love how it turned out!

first- the stencil.

if you haven't heard, all-over stencils can be a beast

and i could not have done this without my mom-literally.

she pretty much did it for me and i love her for it!

the base is ben moore sidewalk gray in flat and

then stenciled with iced cube silver in semi-gloss.

(i color matched with valspar and was very pleased)

i really didn't want to show the overview of the room because of

our ginormous tv but whatever...here you go.

we will eventually get one that fits in the nook

and my husband will be hanging the starburst mirror

i picked up at homegoods months ago.

i didn't even sand this, just primed and spray painted

in a satin finish.

i don't usually get this excited about nurseries,

but this is one adorable room!

i went antique shopping with my mom the other day and came across some beauties.

i love this table and actually the 8 chairs that come with it.

for $450, it's a steal!

and i love it so much because it slightly resembles this z gallerie style that i have adored for quite some time.

these chairs are similar to the ones i just purchased.

all i can say is buyer's remorse...the story of my life.

then we went to another antique shop down the street. it was huge and had so many treasures. about 3/4 of the way through it, i thought - oh, i should be taking some pictures-

this would be great above a side table in the bedroom

some of the pieces were re-finished and had really cute details...

i love this! and look at that deal, plus everything was 30% off. it was hard to pass up.

and actually as i'm writing this post i have a discomfort in my chest- how did i pass this up.

i'm not sure if i will paint them white or stain them a deep dark mahogany

to match the table.

i'm thinking white, but then am i going too much with the trend of painting everything white?

my husband is a guy's guy. he love sports, hates fussy food and fancy restaurants.

totally opposite of me.

this is why i was totally shocked by this set up last night when he was cooking us dinner.

how cute...he used my ramekins for the loaded baked potato fixin's

i think i'm rubbing off on him...and maybe i'm not changing him- maybe he's evolving

it may not seem like a huge deal to you, but this is coming from a guy who despises all of my little things i buy for the house (like toss pillows for the couch) because he doesn't see a purpose for them. he's simple- his ideal dinner is chicken wings and homemade mac n cheese.
so, thanks babe! i loved our dinner{steak, loaded baked pototoes and asparagus} last night.

it's amazing that you don't even realize that teh walls are black/charcoal because of all the white furniture and accessories.

a teepee for my little man

i finished the teepee for jaxon!

here are the supplies, minus the stitch witchery which i didn't use

for the most part it was pretty easy, i think i made it harder than it was because i was being super anal.

you fold the canvas into a triangle and then cut the bottom portion into a semi-circle, and the tip of the triangle into a small semi-circle.

assemble the sticks, which i probably re-did like 50 times...i was obsessed with getting it perfectly spread apart.

voila, a teepee is made!

the tutorial said to use grommets, but i didn't feel like dealing with them, so i just hand stitched the opening at the top with some yarn, which made it more rustic and playful anyway.

i initially bought a feather trim for the bottom of the teepee, but after opening the package i asked myself, do i really want his floor to be covered in feathers everyday {answer: no} what was i thinking?
but since i got the trim for such a good deal {hobby lobby $5- it was 50% off of $10} i had to find something else to trim. duh, the ugly lamp that i have been wanting to throw away for about 3 years but always had high hopes for...

see i told you it was ugly, well the lampshade at least. it's definitely seen better days and it doesn't go with the decor i'm going for in jaxon's big boy room

i bought a lampshade at crate and barrel outlet {my version of goodwill, which i never have luck at and everyone else and their mother seems to} for $5!

it's a natural grasscloth-type fabric perfect for the room

so of course i trimmed that bad boy in the feathers

and there you have it, a lamp makeover for 10 bucks.

i might paint the stand this weekend, not sure yet.

i'm not sure if i still want to trim the hem of the teepee. i saw a cute "leather" fringe trim, but i don't really want to take the teepee to a super literal/authentic state. i know it's a teepee, how modern can you be with it, right?

thoughts on the fringe, yes or no?

my walls in the kitchen are painted a flat ivory color.

flat paint + cooking = nasty-ness

they are crying for a backsplash, as i am too!

when we bought our house, this lonely chair was left behind. personally, i would have never bought this chair because it's just not my taste. i probably would not even buy it at a garage sale, but now it's ours and i decided to make the best of it. and what better way to spruce up a piece of furniture than to paint it.

when in doubt, paint it white, right?

now it is used for our little "office area" in our kitchen.

not bad, now i really like it!

and here's a sneak peak of the teepee i'm working on.

it's almost finished, i just have to add trim, so i don't want to spoil the finale!

i am IN LOVE with this hotel!

the tides south beach is such a great interpretation of

luxe+beach+eclectic

the large coral display is killing me along with the sofa and garden stools

i love the rounded shape on all of the furniture and the warm color pallette.

the same elements are used in various areas of the hotel, making me really want these chairs, really!

and what about that pattern on the wall, wouln't you just die...

i think i've featured this room before, but never knew it was from this hotel.

so...pretty sure it would be a bad idea to vacation here, seeing that i would be pretty depressed upon my departure, and i'd go broke trying to duplicate this look in my home somehow.

best meal of the week

i made this on wednesday and it was a big hit.

chicken breast with red bell peppers and onions in a

white wine sauce

plated with grilled asparagus and mashed potatoes

blackberry streusel topped pie with carmel ice cream

{store bought}

here's how i made it:

chicken

*butterfly and season chicken with olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic powder.

*sautee thinly sliced onions in olive oil on a medium low heat until softened, remove.

*sautee sliced bell peppers in olive oil and butter mixture on medium heat until slightly browned and semi-soft, remove.

*cook seasoned chicken in the same pan that the onions and peppers were cooked in for around 10 minutes or so depending on the thickness of the meat. remove.

*keeping the pan on medium high heat, add 1 Tbsp. butter to the pan and scrape up the browned bits left from the chicken and then add a tablespoon of flour, whisking it together to form a paste

*cook for about 30-45 seconds. than add about a cup of wine whisking until it reduces a bit.

*then add some chicken stock and finely chopped garlic and whisk until it bubbles then lower heat and let it cook for a few minutes, add a bit of salt to taste.

*place the chicken, onions and peppers in pan with sauce and stirred.

mashed potatoes

*peel and cut potatoes into small chunks (i used golden yukons)

*boil unti fork tender

*drain and mash with milk, butter, sour cream, salt and pepper

asparagus

*clean and cut the ends of asparagus

*grill on a grill pan with olive oil until slightly browned, but still firm

*season with a little salt

this was so good and it was pretty simple. i kind of made up the recipe as i went and i was pleasantly surprised. try it out, trust me, you will enjoy it!

{it may look a little complicated but i made this dish on a weeknight after working all day and it was done in no time.}

my quest for the perfect birch: a tree adventure

we have been working on our landscaping for our front and back yard. when we moved in, there was just a huge backyard with...a bunch of grass and the front was a square of mulch and weeds-lots of weeds.

we decided to do a lot of the landscaping now, since many of the shrubs, plants and trees are on sale due to the time of the year. thus, my tree adventure begins.

my quest for the perfect birch started out by visiting several nurseries, home depot, lowes and meijer. some of the stores didn't have any because they had sold out early in the season, some were ridiculously overpriced and some looked like they had seen better days. i was about to give up and just wait until the spring to plant the tree, when my mom came to the rescue. she came across a tree farm about 25 minutes from my house. so, we decided to check it out the morning the landscapers were coming.

so, i was expecting another regular nursery with trees, bushes etc.

when we pulled up, this is the first thing i saw...

then we got out of the car...and this chicken is greeting me right at my feet.

and what plant nursery isn't complete without a pair of swans sitting in the shade

next to the pigs, miniature horses, and ducks.

the owner just bought this to give rides with one of her 8 horses. mixed in with the horses was a donkey mixed with a zebra...didn't get a picture because we were in a golf cart going to see the trees in her fields.

{if you can imagine the body of a zebra-but a little bit more stocky and the head of a donkey}

they sold pumpkins, jam, squash, and fresh eggs- along with the hundreds of trees.

as you can imagine, this was a great surprise for jaxon.

'mommy, are we at the zoo?'

so in the end, the trip was a success. i bought the birch, at a great price, and we had a great time checking out the rest of the farm. pictures of the finished yard are coming up on friday.

i've never seen drew look more beautiful and she is really giving us her sexiest look, right!

this dress is my favorite, and she makes it look so good, even without shoes!

the door makes a great accessory in this shot, those handles are the bomb.

weird...i wore this while sitting by the pool this weekend too ;)

she really lost a lot of weight, but she still looks good.

why can't i be more like my son

we went out to lunch today to the atlanta bread co. and i asked jaxon what he wanted. right away he pointed to the apple pastry and told me he wanted that one. he knew exactly what he wanted right away and didn't change his mind {even with all the delicious choices they had}.

i have a huge problem with decision making and making my mind up. and once i make up my mind, i usually change it several times after.

sometimes it can be quite a hassle. case in point: after renting a truck on saturday to pick up our dining room table at crate and barrel outlet (my obsession) and having it in our house for a day, asking you for advice on chairs, i just changed my mind.

the was a big, oops! i just couldn't get over the fact that it was a veneer to look like bamboo, the color of the stain was a poopy/reddish brown, it was 84 inches long, so it was taking up way too much space and let's not forget the fact that it looked like a conference table- just a bit. it was a final sale, but after pleading with the manager-in the end, i was able to return it. the whole ordeal was such a time consuming fiasco but i learned a very important lesson.

and so my dining room looks like it did saturday morning. an empty room with a white dresser and pictures stacked on the wall that need to be hung.

so thanks to everyone for their suggestions and comments and sorry i wasted your time, and mine.

hopefully i can settle on a style that fits my house and this time i definitely need to make sure it is the right one, before arriving at my house.

this popcorn maker is the best. it may as well be called a crackcorn popper.

it is a microwave popcorn maker that is super easy.

1- simply pour corn kernels into the bottom, making a thin layer

2- place desired amount of butter/margerine in the mesh strainer on the cap (i prefer 2 Tbsp)

3- microwave for 2-3 minutes

4- sprinkle salt and enjoy.

i have finally finished my ottoman! so glad this project is completed and i'm pretty pleased with it. she doesn't have a place yet in my home, but i'm thinking somewhere in the living room, involving a tall mirror propped beside it or behind it. i'll keep you posted.

i had originally wanted to change the legs to either a mid-century style or a curvy/antiquey style, but i didn't feel like dealing with the headache. these will do- i just spray painted them with a satin black.

you can't really tell in the picture, but this fabric has a great sheen from the painted detail.

so, let's just clear this up first...i am not the type of girl that goes camping, does outdoor type activites like hiking or likes a cabin type decor for my home. but, a trend that has been strong and continues to keep people's interest is rustic/wilderness/nature. i myself have even got caught up on this trend. {i recently bought a cardboard moose head for my son's play room which i still have to put together.}

moving into this house, there was absolutely no landscaping and a blank slate in the backyard. perfect.

room for my imagination...luckily my dad is cement finisher and he framed our patio this weekend. i have an inspiration picture, here.

and, the best babysitter evah!

this is an example of one of my favorite design elements. traditional/victorian exterior with a modern interior.

these pops of orange are beauty

love the entryway chandelier and that railing.

i would love to have this shower

this house is pretty neutral with the same color pops mixed throughout the entire house.

you can't see it from the photo, but there was about ten dead bugs trapped in it as well.
